How to Tell If a Website Is Built With Squarespace

You like a site and want to know what it runs on. Or you inherited a site and nobody remembers where it is hosted. Both are quick to settle.

The one-minute way

Paste the address on deadsimplebackups.com. The free backup reads the page and reports whether it is Squarespace, which version, template hints on 7.0 sites, the fonts, the colors, and the integrations it can see. You also get that page as HTML and a full-page screenshot, which is handy if you are about to rebuild something in its style.

The manual way

  1. View the source. Right-click the page and choose View Page Source. Search for squarespace. Squarespace sites load scripts and styles from static1.squarespace.com and images from images.squarespace-cdn.com, and the HTML usually mentions Squarespace in comments or in a Static.SQUARESPACE_CONTEXT block.
  2. Look at the image addresses. Right-click any photo and copy its address. squarespace-cdn.com in the address is a giveaway.
  3. Try /config. Add /config to the site's address. On a Squarespace site it redirects to a Squarespace login screen.

Telling 7.0 from 7.1

The source of a 7.0 site names the template, either in a data-template or templateId value or in a body class such as brine or bedford. A 7.1 site mentions fluid-engine or shows "siteVersion":"7.1" in its context block. More detail in Squarespace 7.0 vs 7.1: which version is my site?

If it is not Squarespace

The same source view answers most cases: wixstatic.com and parastorage.com mean Wix; showit.co means Showit; godaddysites.com or img1.wsimg.com means GoDaddy Website Builder; webflow.io and assets-global.website-files.com mean Webflow; wp-content means WordPress. Q: Is there a Squarespace site checker?

Q: Can Squarespace sites hide that they are Squarespace?

Not fully. Custom domains hide the squarespace.com address, but the scripts, styles, and images still come from Squarespace's servers.
