Is There a Rewind or UpdraftPlus for Squarespace?
If you have used WordPress or Shopify, you may be looking for the Squarespace version of a tool you already know. It does not exist in that form, and the reason is worth two minutes, because it changes what you should expect.
Why those tools cannot work on Squarespace
UpdraftPlus, BlogVault, Jetpack Backup are WordPress plugins. They run inside WordPress, read the database and files directly, and can restore them in place. Squarespace does not allow plugins and does not expose the database or files. Nothing can run inside it.
Rewind backs up Shopify and BigCommerce stores through those platforms' APIs, and can restore products, themes, and orders. At the time of writing Rewind does not offer a Squarespace product, and Squarespace's API does not provide the access a restore would need.
So on Squarespace there is no "restore in place" tool, from anyone. The only thing outside Squarespace that can be copied is what Squarespace publishes: the public site.
What a Squarespace backup can be
A dated copy of the public site: every page as HTML, a full-page screenshot of every page, and the images, fonts, and styles, stored outside Squarespace. It restores the way a printed manuscript restores a book: you have everything, and you type it back in. For a lost section that is minutes. For a whole site it is a rebuild with every page in front of you.
That is what Dead Simple Backups does, monthly, for $79 a year, with 12 months of history and no password involved.
When to use what
- Shopify or BigCommerce store: Rewind or a similar API-based tool, which can restore in place.
- WordPress site: a backup plugin with one-click restore.
- Squarespace site: a monthly copy of the public pages. Add Squarespace's export for blog post data if you are migrating.
- Any site you will one day leave: a copy of the public pages, whichever platform, because platform tools stop working the day you stop paying.
Q: Does Squarespace have a backup app or plugin?
No. Squarespace does not support plugins, and its built-in export is for moving blog posts to WordPress, not a backup.
Q: Is there a one-click restore for Squarespace?
No tool can restore into Squarespace with one click, because Squarespace has no import for site pages. A backup gives you the material to rebuild by hand.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
