Your Web Designer Disappeared With the Squarespace Login. Now What?

This happens more than anyone admits. A freelancer built the site under their own Squarespace account, or added you as a contributor and then went quiet. The site is fine today. You just cannot change it, and if the card on file fails, it disappears.

First: copy the site while it is still up

Before any emails, take a copy of what exists. If the account is lost for good, the copy is the only thing that lets you rebuild. Paste the homepage into the free backup to get that page now, and start the monthly plan so every public page, with full-page screenshots and images, is saved tonight and on the 1st of every month after. No password is needed for any of this, which is the point.

Then: work out who owns what

Three things can be owned separately: the Squarespace account, the domain, and the email address the account uses.

Getting the account back

  1. Try the designer. A plain, friendly message asking to be made owner works more often than people expect. Offer to pay the outstanding invoice.
  2. Try the recovery flow. If the account email is one you can access, reset the password.
  3. Contact Squarespace support. Explain that you are the business owner, provide the domain, billing details, and any contracts or invoices. They have a process for this. It takes days, not minutes.
  4. If the domain is yours, you can, in the worst case, build a new site and point the domain at it. The backup makes that a rebuild rather than a rewrite.

Prevent the next one

Q: Can Squarespace transfer a site to me without the designer?

Sometimes, through support, if you can prove you own the business and the site. It takes time and paperwork. Having the domain in your name helps a lot.

Q: Can I back up the site without the login?

Yes. Every public page is visible to visitors, and that is what a backup copies. Paste the address and you have a copy in minutes.

Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
