Does Squarespace Have Version History?
People search for this after a bad edit: a paragraph rewritten, a section removed, a gallery reordered, then saved. The hope is a "restore previous version" button like Google Docs has. Squarespace does not have one.
What Squarespace does have
- Undo while editing. Inside an editing session you can step back through changes. Close the editor or save, and the history is gone.
- A trash for deleted pages and posts. Whole pages and blog posts you delete can be recovered from the Pages panel for 30 days. Sections and blocks inside a page are not covered.
- Duplicate site. You can copy the whole site into a new trial site in your account. It is a way to fork a site before a redesign, not a timeline you can scroll through.
- The live site itself. As long as you pay, the current version exists on their servers. That is one version: the current one.
What it does not have
There is no per-page history, no "what did this page say last month," and no way to compare two dates. If a change was saved and the editor was closed, the previous text is gone unless you kept a copy somewhere else.
How to get version history anyway
Keep dated copies of the public pages outside Squarespace. That is what a backup service does: every month, every public page as HTML and as a full-page screenshot, stored with a date on it.
With that, version history looks like this:
- Open the backup from before the change.
- Open the page's screenshot to see exactly how it looked, or the HTML to copy the exact text.
- Paste the old text back, or rebuild the section.
It is not a button, but it answers the question a button would: what was there before. Dead Simple Backups does this on the 1st of every month for $79 a year and keeps 12 months, so you can go back about a year.
The cheapest habit
If you are about to make a big change, take the free one-page backup of that page first. It is on the homepage, takes a minute or two, and needs no account. Then edit with a safety net.
Q: Can I see what my Squarespace page looked like last month?
Not inside Squarespace. You need a copy from last month, which a monthly backup provides as a screenshot and as HTML.
Q: Does the Squarespace editor's undo work after I save?
Undo works during the editing session. After the editor is closed, the previous state cannot be recovered from Squarespace.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
