How to Restore a Deleted Squarespace Page

You deleted a page, or someone did, and the site looks wrong. Here is what to try, in order, from fastest to slowest.

1. Look in the Pages panel trash

Squarespace keeps deleted pages in Deleted Pages at the bottom of the Pages panel for 30 days, and you can restore a page from there with one click, per Restoring deleted pages and blog posts. Open the Pages panel, scroll to the bottom, click Deleted Pages, and if the page is listed, restore it and you are done. Deleted blog posts have their own Deleted Posts area at the bottom of the blog page's panel, and come back as drafts.

Two limits to know: the trash empties after 30 days, and it only holds pages and posts. A section deleted from a page that still exists does not go to the trash. Neither does text you overwrote.

2. Check whether the page was really deleted

Sometimes a page is not gone, just moved to "Not linked" (Squarespace's name for pages that exist but are not in the navigation), disabled, or renamed. Search the Pages panel by the page title before assuming the worst.

3. Rebuild it from a backup

If the trash is empty, you need a copy of the page from before it was deleted. Squarespace does not keep one for you. If you have a monthly backup, open the zip from the month before the deletion:

1. Open screenshots/ and find the page. The screenshot shows the whole page top to bottom, so you can see the sections, the order, and the images.
2. Open the page from html/ in a browser and copy the text section by section into a new page in Squarespace.
3. Upload the images from assets/. The file names end with the original name, so hero.jpg is easy to find.
4. Give the new page the old address so old links and search results keep working.

A one-section landing page takes ten minutes. A long page with galleries takes half an hour. Without a backup, it takes as long as writing the page did the first time.

4. Last resorts

• Google's cache and the Wayback Machine. Occasionally a copy exists. Text usually survives; images and layout often do not. Worth a look, not worth relying on.
• Old email or documents. The person who wrote the page may still have the draft.

Making this a non-event next time
