How to Download All Images From a Squarespace Site

You need the photos off the site: for a redesign, a print job, a new platform, or because the originals are on a laptop that died. Squarespace does not have a bulk download. Here is what does work.

A few images

Right-click the image on the live site and choose Save Image As. Squarespace serves a resized copy by default; to get the largest version, open the image address and remove the ?format=... part at the end, or change it to ?format=original, then save that.

All images from a gallery

Open the gallery page, then view the page source and search for squarespace-cdn. Each image appears with its address. Copy the addresses into a download tool. Tedious for one gallery, painful for ten.

Every image on every page, in one go

A site crawler fetches each public page and every image those pages use. What you will not get from the live site

• The original uploads. Squarespace serves web-sized versions. If you uploaded a 40 MB TIFF, the site never shows that file, so no crawler can fetch it. Squarespace's own export does not include originals either.
• Images behind a member login or a page password. They are not visible to visitors.
• Images inside PDFs or other documents, other than the documents themselves.

After the download

Rename the files if you like; the short code at the front of each name only exists to keep two hero.jpg files from colliding. Keep the theme report from the zip next to the images; it records the fonts and colors, which is usually the next thing a designer asks for.

Q: Does Squarespace's export include images?

The export file references some images, mainly in blog posts, and does not include product images, gallery originals, or images placed in page sections. A crawl of the live pages catches what visitors can see.

Q: Can I download full-resolution images from Squarespace?

You can download the largest size the site serves, which is usually 2500 pixels wide. The original upload is not served to visitors.
