How to Move From Squarespace to Webflow or Framer

Webflow and Framer are where a lot of Squarespace sites go when the owner wants more control over design. Both are visual builders, and neither has an import for Squarespace. The Squarespace export file is for WordPress and is of little use here. Practically, you rebuild every page.

That is fine if you have a good reference. It is miserable if you are working from memory and a live site that keeps changing.

Save the reference first

A complete copy of the current site: each page as HTML, a full-page screenshot of each page, the images at full size, and the fonts and colors. Dead Simple Backups makes that copy in one run and keeps a fresh one every month, which matters when a rebuild takes weeks and someone updates the old site midway.

The full-page screenshots are the thing designers end up using most. Open one next to the Webflow or Framer canvas and match section by section.

Rebuild in order

  1. Set up the style system first. The theme report lists the fonts and hex codes. Define them as styles or tokens before building pages, so every page matches.
  2. Build one representative page. Usually the homepage. Get spacing and type right there, then reuse.
  3. Pull the text from the HTML copy, not by retyping from a screenshot.
  4. Upload images from the assets folder. They are the largest sizes the old site served.
  5. Recreate the CMS content. Blog posts and products become CMS collections in Webflow or Framer. Paste them in from the HTML copies, or, for a large blog, use the Squarespace export file as a data source for a CSV import.

Before the switch

After the switch

Keep backing up the new site. Webflow and Framer host your site the same way Squarespace did: as long as you pay, and with no monthly copy in your inbox. The monthly backup works on any public site.

Q: Can I import a Squarespace site into Webflow?

No. Webflow has no Squarespace importer. You rebuild pages and can import blog posts as CMS items from a CSV.

Q: Can I import a Squarespace site into Framer?

No. Framer can import from Figma and has CMS import from CSV, but not a site import from Squarespace. Rebuild from a copy of the live site.

Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
