What Happens When Your GoDaddy Website Builder Plan Expires?

GoDaddy sells two things that people mix up: the domain and the Website Builder plan. They renew separately, and they fail separately.

When the Website Builder plan expires

The site stops being served. Visitors get an error or a GoDaddy placeholder. GoDaddy usually keeps the site's content for a period so you can renew and bring it back, but during that time there is no public copy and nothing to download. If the period passes, the site is gone.

At the time of writing there is no export before or after expiry, so the only copy of your pages that survives a lapse is one you made while the site was live.

When the domain expires

The site may still be there, but nobody can reach it by name. After the registrar's grace period, the domain can be registered by someone else. Renewal reminders go to the account email, which is often a former employee's or an agency's. Check it.

Before a plan lapses on purpose

If you are leaving GoDaddy:

1. Take a copy of every public page: HTML, full-page screenshots, and images. Dead Simple Backups does this in one run for $9, or monthly if you keep it.
2. Export store products and orders, appointments, and contacts as files.
3. Build the new site, add redirects, and point the domain.
4. Let the plan end last.

If it already lapsed

Renew if GoDaddy still holds the content; that is the only way to get the pages back. If the content is gone, check the Wayback Machine for fragments and rebuild from whatever copies exist: old emails, the designer's files, your own screenshots. Then set up a monthly backup so it does not happen twice.
