How does the crawler behave on my site?
Politely. It identifies itself, reads your sitemap and robots.txt, fetches a few pages at a time, follows links only on your own domain, and stops at 5,000 pages, 4 GB, or 180 minutes.
The crawler announces itself with the user agent SquarespaceBackupTool, starts from your sitemap, and honors robots.txt. It follows links only to pages on your own domain and never to other sites, checkout pages, or account screens.
It fetches a handful of pages at a time and then renders each page once in a real browser for the full-page screenshot. On a typical site that is a few hundred requests spread over several minutes, once a month, well under what a single busy visitor causes.
Images, styles, and fonts are copied once per file, from your domain and from the Squarespace CDN. Files over 25 MB are skipped.
If you would rather the crawler skipped a section, add it to robots.txt and it will.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
