What are the limits on pages and size?

5,000 pages and 4 GB per backup, screenshots of the first 4,000 pages, 100 MB per file, pages of any size, 180 minutes per backup. Each is well past what Squarespace allows a site, and we raise any of them on request.

Per backup:

• 5,000 pages, counted after skipping login and admin addresses. Squarespace allows 1,000 pages on a site and recommends 400. Blog posts and products count as pages for us, and Squarespace puts no cap on those, which is why ours is five times theirs.
• Full-page screenshots of the first 4,000 pages, in the order the site lists them. Past that, pages are saved as HTML and text without a screenshot.
• 4 GB of content: HTML, screenshots, images, styles, and fonts together.
• 100 MB per file. Squarespace accepts uploads up to 20 MB, so every image, font, stylesheet, and video a Squarespace site can hold fits, with room to spare for files hosted elsewhere. Anything larger is left as a link to the live site.
• Pages of any size. A page's HTML is saved whole, however big it is. The text copy and the list of files a page uses come from its first 20 MB, which is more HTML than any real page has; Squarespace recommends keeping a whole page under 5 MB with its images. A single document over 200 MB is a download served as a page, and is listed rather than saved.
• 20,000 files.
• 180 minutes per backup, 90 seconds per screenshot, and 20,000 pixels of screenshot height. A page that scrolls further than that is captured to that point; its HTML still has everything.

A typical Squarespace site has 10 to 40 pages and comes to 30 to 150 MB with everything copied. The largest sites we back up today run to 1,200 pages and 1.5 GB, well inside these limits.

What happens at a limit

The backup is still made and delivered with everything that fit. The monthly email and your dashboard say which limit was reached and what was left out, the report inside the zip lists it, and we hear about it at the same time. Nothing already saved is lost.

When a backup comes within 80% of a limit, the email says so ahead of time.
