Why does my backup say it hit a limit?

The site has more than 5,000 public pages, or its content passed 4 GB, or the crawl ran past its time limit. The backup still holds everything captured up to that point, and pages.txt shows exactly what is in it.

The monthly email, your dashboard, and the report inside the zip name the limit a backup reached and what was left out. Nothing is lost from what was captured; the zip just does not hold the whole site. See What are the limits on pages and size? for the numbers.

Common reasons:

• A very large blog or shop. Every post and product is a page, and so is every tag and category page. Together they can pass 5,000.
• Very large images. Original-size photos of 10 to 20 MB each add up toward the 4 GB budget on a site with hundreds of them.
• Tag and category pages. Squarespace generates a page per tag and per category, and they count.

What to do:

• Open pages.txt in the zip to see which pages made it and which did not.
• If the missing pages matter, write to hello@deadsimplebackups.com with the page count and we will tell you what is possible.
