Does Wix Back Up Your Website? Site History Explained
Short answer: Wix keeps your site running and keeps a history of versions you can restore inside the editor. It does not give you a downloadable backup of your site, and nothing it keeps survives losing the account.
What Site History does
Wix saves versions of your site as you work and publish. From the editor you can open Site History, look at earlier versions, and restore one. If someone wrecks the homepage on Tuesday, you can go back to Monday's version. That is real and useful, and for the most common problem, a bad edit, it is often enough.
Where it stops
- It lives in your account. If the account is lost, locked, or belongs to a designer who left, Site History goes with it.
- It is not downloadable. You cannot save a version to your computer, hand it to a developer, or open it outside Wix.
- It is not permanent. Versions are kept for a limited time; check the current limit in the editor.
- It ends with the plan. If the Premium plan lapses and the site drops to free or goes offline, the history is not a copy you hold.
- It only exists while Wix exists for you. The day you leave Wix, there is no version history to take.
What a backup adds
A dated copy of the public site stored outside Wix: every page as HTML, a full-page screenshot of each page, and the images, styles, and fonts, downloadable as a zip. It answers the questions Site History cannot: what did the site look like six months ago, can I hand a complete copy to the next developer, and what do I have if the account is gone.
Dead Simple Backups makes that copy on the 1st of every month, keeps 12 months of them, and needs no Wix login. The free backup of one page is on the same page.
Use both
Site History for the everyday undo. A monthly backup for everything Site History does not cover. The second one costs $79 a year and takes no attention after checkout.
Q: Does Wix have automatic backups?
Wix keeps Site History automatically inside the editor. It does not create a downloadable backup of your site.
Q: Can I restore a deleted Wix site?
If the site was deleted from your account, Wix has a trash from which sites can be restored for a while. Site History does not help once the site itself is gone, and neither helps once the account is gone. A copy stored outside Wix does.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
