How to Export a Wix Site (and What You Cannot)

People search for this when they are leaving Wix, or when they want a copy just in case. The answer is the same for both: Wix does not export a site. Here is what you can get out, and how.

What Wix will give you as files

At the time of writing, from the Wix dashboard you can download:

Pages, the design, the images placed on pages, forms, and settings are not exportable. Wix has said so for years, and the same applies to Wix Studio.

What you can copy yourself

Everything a visitor sees is copyable, because it is served to every visitor. A crawl of the public site gets:

Dead Simple Backups does all three in one run and repeats it monthly. The free backup on that page shows one page of your site as HTML with a full-page screenshot in a couple of minutes, which is the quickest way to see what a copy looks like.

Moving a Wix site to another platform

There is no importer for Wix sites on WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow, or Framer. You rebuild, using the copy as the reference:

  1. Export blog posts from Wix and import them into the new platform's blog.
  2. Export store products as CSV and import them if the new platform supports it.
  3. Rebuild each page with its screenshot and HTML open beside the editor, pulling text from the HTML and images from the copy's assets folder.
  4. Map old addresses to new ones and set up redirects.
  5. Move the domain last, after the new site works. Keep Wix live until then.

The originals problem

Wix serves resized images to visitors. The largest size on the page is the largest any crawl can get. If you have original photos, download them from the Wix media manager while you still have access, or keep them where the photographer sent them.

Q: Can I export a Wix site to HTML?

Not through Wix. A crawl of the public pages produces the HTML, which is what a backup service or a desktop crawler gives you.

Q: Can I transfer a Wix site to WordPress?

Blog posts can be exported and imported. Pages have to be rebuilt from a copy of the live site. There is no direct transfer.

Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
