How to Back Up a Wix Site

Wix keeps your site on its servers and, at the time of writing, offers no way to download it. What you can do is copy what visitors see: the public pages, their images, their fonts, and how they look. Here are the ways, from smallest to most complete.

What Wix gives you

• Site History. Inside the editor, Wix keeps earlier versions of the site for a while and lets you restore one. It works only while you have the account and only inside Wix. It is a safety net against a bad edit, not a copy you can keep.
• Data exports. Contacts, orders, and blog posts can be downloaded as files from the dashboard. Pages, design, and images cannot.
• Duplicate site. You can copy a site inside your account. Same account, same risks, no download.

Method 1: save pages by hand

Open a page and use Save As in your browser. You get one HTML file and a folder of files per page. It is fine for a homepage and painful for thirty pages, and the saved page often looks wrong because Wix loads parts of the layout with scripts.

Method 2: a desktop crawler

HTTrack or SiteSucker can copy a site to a folder. Wix serves images from a separate host, so you will need to allow it in the crawler's settings, and script-driven sections may not render in the copy. You also have to remember to run it.

Method 3: a monthly backup

1. Keep Site History for day-to-day undo.
2. Take the free single-page backup before any big change.
3. Run the monthly backup so a copy of the whole site exists outside Wix, whatever happens to the account.
