How to Back Up a Showit Site
Showit is a design canvas. Every element sits where the designer put it, on a desktop layout and a mobile layout, which is why Showit sites look the way they do and why nothing about them exports. At the time of writing, Showit offers no way to download a site.
If the site matters, the copy has to come from the public pages.
What Showit gives you
- The live site, as long as the subscription is paid.
- A WordPress blog underneath. Showit blogs run on WordPress, so posts can be exported from the WordPress side.
- Undo while editing, not a version history after publishing.
The two things worth copying
The HTML and assets. Each public page, with its images, fonts, and stylesheets. On Showit the HTML alone renders poorly outside Showit, because the layout depends on the canvas's positioning and scripts.
Full-page screenshots. On Showit these are the backup. A screenshot of each page, rendered in a real browser after everything has loaded, records the design exactly: the overlaps, the type, the spacing that took the designer a week. When the site has to be rebuilt on Showit or anywhere else, the screenshot is the brief.
How to get both
Dead Simple Backups crawls the public site on the 1st of every month: each page as HTML with its assets copied from Showit's servers, and a full-page screenshot of each page from a real browser. It emails a private link, keeps 12 months, and needs no Showit login.
The free backup on the Showit page does one page: paste any address and you have the HTML and the full-page screenshot in a couple of minutes.
The mobile layout
Screenshots are taken at desktop width. The mobile layout uses the same text and images, which are all in the copy. If the mobile design matters to you separately, take screenshots of it from your phone and keep them next to the backups.
Q: Can I download my Showit website?
Not from Showit. A crawl of the public pages gives you HTML, images, fonts, and screenshots. Blog posts can be exported from the WordPress blog.
Q: Does a backup let me restore a Showit page?
It gives you the screenshot and the text to rebuild the page on the canvas. Showit has no import, so the rebuild is by hand.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
