Why don't you need my Squarespace password?
We back up what visitors can already see. The crawler fetches your public pages the same way a browser does, so there is nothing to log in to and nothing for us to store.
A Squarespace login gives access to your admin panel, billing, and drafts. A backup of the live site needs none of that. Every public page, image, stylesheet, and font is already served to anyone who visits, and that is exactly what we copy.
This has two consequences you should know about:
- Nothing to leak. We never hold a password, an API key, or a Squarespace session. If our systems were ever breached, there would be no credential of yours in them.
- Public pages only. Pages behind a member login or a page password are not visible to a visitor, so they are not in the backup. See Are password-protected or member pages included?
The same is true of the free backup: paste an address, nothing else.
Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
