What happens if my site stops loading?

Once a day we load your homepage. If it fails twice, a minute apart, you get one email with your latest backup, and one more when the site is back.

Once a day, we load the homepage of every site on a plan, the same way a visitor would. That is the moment a backup service is for: the day the site is not there.

What counts as down. No answer at all, a server error, a missing homepage, a domain that no longer points anywhere, or the page your website builder shows when a plan has lapsed ("Website Expired", "This site is not available", "This domain is not connected"). We check twice, a minute apart, and only count it when both fail, so one slow answer is not an alarm.

What does not count. A password page, a "prove you are human" wall, or a page that simply loads slowly. Those mean the site exists, and we leave you alone.

What you get. One email, with a link to your latest backup of every page, with screenshots. Open it in a browser, copy the words back, or hand the folder to whoever rebuilds the site. If someone else is listed under "send the monthly backup to", they get the same note, without the link to your account. When the site loads again, you get one more email saying so. Nothing in between.

While it is down. We do not make a new monthly backup of a site that is not loading; there would be nothing in it. Your existing backups stay where they are, and we try again every day.

Turning it off. The daily check comes with every plan and is separate from the monthly email setting, because it is the one message most people would want even after switching the rest off. To stop it entirely, cancel the plan or write to us.

Squarespace doesn't give you a copy of your site. We do: every public page, full-page screenshots, images and fonts, in your inbox on the 1st.
