What Happens When Your Wix Premium Plan Expires

Your site is not deleted. When a Wix Premium plan lapses, the site drops back to the free version: it moves to a free Wix address, Wix ads appear on it, and the custom domain you had connected is disconnected. The pages are still in your editor, but the site your visitors knew is gone from the address they used.

That distinction is the whole problem. People hear "the site is not deleted" and relax. What was deleted is the thing customers, Google, and every link you ever sent were pointing at.

What changes the day it lapses

• The address. The site returns to a free Wix URL. Anyone who types your domain, clicks an old link, or finds you in search results does not land on your site.
• Wix ads. The free version carries Wix branding on your pages.
• The limits. The free version comes with much smaller storage and bandwidth than a paid plan, in the region of 500MB each at the time of writing.
• Anything that needed the paid plan. Features that came with the plan you were paying for stop working.

What does not change

Your pages, your design, and your images are still in the Wix editor, and Site History is still there. If you pay again, Wix can reactivate the plan and the site comes back at its old address. For a lapse you notice within days, that is usually the end of the story.

The two ways this gets expensive

One: the domain and the plan are separate purchases. A domain bought through Wix is billed separately from the site plan. A card that expires often takes both with it. A site plan you can restart; a domain that runs through its expiry, grace, and redemption periods can be bought by someone else, and then the address is not yours at any price.

Two: nobody notices for months. A lapsed plan on a site that is not checked daily is found when a customer says the link is broken, or when someone searches for the business and finds a wixsite.com page covered in ads. By then the search ranking has dropped and the domain clock has been running.

What you cannot get from Wix, before or after

Wix has no export for a website. You can download some records, such as contacts, orders, and a product list, but the pages themselves, the layout, and the design are not something Wix hands over, and blog posts cannot be exported to other platforms. Site History is an undo button inside your account, not a file you can keep.

So the copy has to be made while the site is up. There is no way to reach back and get one afterwards.

What to do before it matters

1. Turn auto renewal on, for the plan and the domain. Check that the card on file is current. Most lapses are a card, not a decision.
2. Point the billing email at an address you read. Wix warns before a plan ends. Those warnings are worthless in an inbox nobody opens, which is often the case when a designer set the site up years ago.
3. Keep a copy of the public site somewhere Wix does not control. Every page as HTML, a picture of how each page looked, and the images. That copy is what lets you rebuild, or prove what was there, whatever happens to the plan.

Reconnecting is straightforward if the domain registration itself is still current. If the domain also expired and ran through its grace and redemption periods, it can be registered by anyone, and you may not get it back.

Q: Will my Google ranking survive?

Not intact. Search engines that recrawl while the domain is dark will drop the pages. A site restored quickly usually recovers; one left down for months starts over.

Q: Can I download my Wix site before cancelling?

Not from Wix. You can copy the public pages yourself with a desktop crawler, or use a backup service that saves each page as HTML with a screenshot. Either way, do it while the site is still live.
